Some silhouettes take one clear reference and run with it. The New Balance 204L takes two, and lets them sit in tension.

On one side, the refined proportions of '70s running shoes: petite, unfussy, built for movement rather than spectacle. On the other, the technical DNA of 2000s running design, filtered through New Balance's own archive. The result is a low-pro shoe that reads sleeker and more compact than its Y2K-leaning siblings, the 740 and 530 models, without losing any of the character that makes retro tech style so wearable right now.

We went to introduce it somewhere that matched the quiet confidence, so we went to Seoul. Not the postcard version of the city, but its quiet streets that pace of a day that moves without trying to impress anyone. We followed a woman through hers, minimal, a little raw, entirely her own, and let her show us how the 204L fits into it rather than the other way around. That's really the idea behind this shoe: not a single way to wear it, but a way of moving that it happens to suit.

Up close, its own character comes through. High-and-low texture across the upper, embossing that's been exaggerated just enough to notice, an abstract tread underneath that reads almost sculptural.
